I paint with watercolor on prepared clay surface, which is a more smooth and solid surface compared to watercolor paper, and it allows for vibrant colors and more subtle layering. I prepare the panels myself, and occasionally I also use Ampersand's aquabord, which is a pre-made store bought surface.
Since I have developed my own surface, an element of experimentation is added to the painting process. Each newly prepared surface reacts slightly different to water and pigment, which makes the paint less controllable. Subsequently, the unpredictability has become an essential element in the paintings, which adds to the subject's expression.
All clay surfaces are made of 100% archival material.
